EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 23 Northwestern tied No. 18 Notre Dame in a scoreless match at Martin Stadium on Sunday that marked the end of the preseason for the Wildcats.
Chicago's Big Ten Team opens the regular season on Friday, Aug. 18 against DePaul at Martin Stadium at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to help the team celebrate its 2016 Big Ten championship.
Northwestern played nearly its entire roster against the Irish, with Lauren Clem and Molly Lansford combining for a shutout with two saves each. Clem played the entire first half before giving way to Lansford nearly halfway through the second.
The Wildcats dominated the first half, controlling the ball and outshooting Notre Dame, 4-1. The 'Cats also took four corner kicks to the Irish's one in the opening frame. Kim Jerantowski, Brenna Lovera, Maria Fayeulle, Nia Harris and Kylie Fisher each had one shot apiece of Northwestern's five on the day.
The second half was all about defense, as Notre Dame racked up six shots and five corner kicks, but the Northwestern defense held strong and kept the nationally ranked Irish out of the net.
