EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem has been named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, the United Soccer Coaches and Missouri Athletic Club announced Tuesday.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year.
Clem's inclusion on the watch list comes on the heels of a record-breaking junior season, in which she headlined a Northwestern defense that allowed just seven goals all season and posted 17 shutouts, leading the country and setting a program record. Clem also ranked first in the country with a 0.927 save percentage.
She has 39 career shutouts, 16 shy of the all-time NCAA record of 55, held by UCLA's Katelyn Rowland (2011-14).
Northwestern has improved its record in each year of Clem's career and comes into 2017 following a 16-3-4 mark last season, a Big Ten regular season championship, and the program's second-ever trip to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
Clem is one of 30 student-athletes included on the Women's Watch List, which is compiled by members of the United Soccer Coaches All-America Committees. Fifteen semifinalists will be named near the end of the season based on voting by NCAA Division I coaches. Three finalists will ultimately be placed on the ballot for the award with the winner announced Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
