EVANSTON, Ill. — A trio of Northwestern Wildcats represented the women's swimming and diving program at a pair of meets last week.
Rising sophomore Valerie Gruest Slowing competed at the 2017 Central American and and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation Championships in Trinidad & Tobago, while graduate Melissa Postoll and rising sophomore Krystal Lara raced at the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis.
Gruest Slowing dominated the competition to the tune of seven gold medals, five CCCAN records and one Guatemalan Open National Record. She finished claimed gold in the 800 free (8:40.30), 100 fly (1:02.14), 200 free (2:03.73), 400 individual medley (4:54.74), 200 IM (2:20.42), 200 fly (2:14.59) and 400 free (4:16.42). Her times in the 400 free, 800 free, 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM marked the new CCCAN records and her new Guatemalan Open National record came in the 200 IM.
Competing in the 15-17 age division, Gruest Slowing was awarded the High point award for her age group.
Postoll put an exclamation point on her stellar career in purple with a career-best time and 12th-place finish in the 200 back. She posted a 2:11.62 in the prelims of the event before posting the best time in the consolation final. Postoll also posted the best time in the consolation final of the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:16.85.
Lara did not taper for the event, but traveled as a part of her summer training program and competed in a pair of events. She competed in the 100 back and finished with a time of 1:03.70 while also posting a 1:02.21 in a 100 fly time trial.
Northwestern will continue to be represented at international meets later this summer, with student-athletes set to compete at the U.S. Open in East Meadow, New York, 20th Maccabiah Games, 2017 World Championships in Budapest and 2017 World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan.
