Dear Northwestern: Kacie Komoto

Dear Northwestern,

Before even setting foot on campus, I thought I had you figured out. I was going to earn good grades, learn a thing or two, improve my game, become more independent, and eventually walk away with that degree. I was so determined to do it all that I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

But that was freshman year me and, ironically enough, the greatest lesson I've learned in my four years here is that you don't have to do it all, and you especially don't have to do it alone. There is a whole community here that is more than willing to help in any way they can.

That being said, I'd like to thank the entire Northwestern athletic staff. The support my team and I received during this year's NCAA Championships was simply incredible.  I will never forget when you were still there to cheer us on during our walk into the 18th green. All week, through the wind, the rain, and the delays, your cheering never faltered and you powered through the tough conditions right there next to us.

Thank you to my coaches for always staying patient with me. Whether it was forgetting yardage books, getting lost on the way to practice, or struggling with my game, you supported me through it all and I can't thank you enough for it.

To my teammates, it's been quite a year, hasn't it? It's almost been 2 weeks since we were out their fighting for a national title and, for me, what we've accomplished still hasn't sunk in yet. From Janet Mao's putt to send us into the championship match to Hannah Kim singing, "Sugar," into the microphone in the media room – those are all memories that I will always remember and appreciate. During my four years at Northwestern, I've been blessed to learn from a number of talented and intelligent women who have helped shaped me into the person I am today. Needless to say, I'm excited for everything that's on the horizon for you all as a team and as individuals.

I'd also like to thank my family for their endless support. I know I should've called home more than I did, but no matter what, you sent me care packages anyway.

Lastly, thank you Northwestern! You've challenged me in every aspect of my life, but I know that you have made me that much stronger for it. And as I move on to the next chapter of my life, I will always wear the 'N' with pride! Go 'Cats!

Sincerely,

Kacie Komoto
