EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern fencer Abby Tartell will represent the USA this summer at the 20th World Maccabiah Games as a member of the sabre fencing team.
The Maccabi Games will take place July 4-18 in Israel, featuring over 10,000 Jewish athletes from 80 countries. Maccabi USA will bring a team of over 1,100 athletes.
Tartell enjoyed a successful first season with the Wildcats, finishing with a 36-10 record on the sabre squad, including a team silver medal at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. Tartell also posted a 12-0 record at the Vassar Invitational in November in the first duals event of her career.
The Golden Beach, Florida, native was one of six fencers selected to the Maccabi USA sabre team and one of just two women fencers.
Tartell will join fellow Wildcat Peyton Greeberg, a sophomore swimmer in representing USA in Israel.
Since 1932, over 62,000 athletes have participated in the Maccabiah Games, in a celebration of Jewish strength and solidarity. Further information about the Maccabi Games can be found here.
