Match Play Semifinals Called for Darkness, To Resume Wednesday Morning

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. — Top-seeded Northwestern women's golf will have to wait one more day to earn a trip to the final round of the NCAA Championships match play as Tuesday's semifinal against Southern California was called for darkness.

With between three and seven holes left, the Trojans lead 4-1-0, though three of USC's advantages are by only one hole. The semifinal was delayed two hours and 20 minutes due to lightning with the 'Cats straddling the turn.

MATCH PLAY RESULTS

Earlier in the day, the 'Cats defeated Kent State 3-2-0 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships.

Sarah Cho commanded her match over Kent State's Kelly Nielsen, reaching a 4-up advantage by the sixth hole. After staying steadfast around the turn, she extended her lead again until reaching a 6-up mark with five holes to go and putting the first point on the board for the 'Cats.

Next to notch a point for NU was Hannah Kim. Control of her advantage fluctuated back-and-forth in the front nine, but Kim took the lead on the 11th hole and never looked back. A par on No. 17 finished her match 3&1 and gave the 'Cats a 2-1 advantage.

Soon thereafter, Kacie Komoto — playing in her final collegiate event — sealed the trip to the semifinals for Northwestern. It came down to the 18th hole, but the Hawaii native made par to finish 2-up and give the 'Cats their all-important third point.

Janet Mao showed resiliency in the quarterfinals. Despite going 3-down by the eighth hole, she came back to within one hole on two different occasions in the back nine. However, Kent State's Karoline Stormo won their match 3&2.

Stephanie Lau's match against the Golden Flashes was conceded upon the Wildcat victory. However, she had hurtled back from 3-down on the 11th hole to 1-down on the conclusion of her 15th and final hole.

Chicago's Big Ten Team, playing roughly 60 miles from campus and in front of scores of fans, soundly earned the No. 1 seed in match play competition, topping second-place Stanford by eight strokes and clearing the cutline by 22 strokes.
