ATHENS, Ga. – Led by veterans Kacie Komoto and Hannah Kim, the No. 11 and third-seeded Wildcats finished Day 1 of the NCAA Athens Regional in a tie for third on a challenging day for scoring at the University of Georgia Golf Course (Par-72; 6,344 yards).

Kim, a three-time First Team All-Big Ten honoree and the 2017 Mary Fossum Award winner, birdied three holes on the back-nine in an even-par round, including the 511-yard, Par-5 No. 12, the longest offering on the course.
Komoto, a senior and three-time All-Big Ten recipient during her career, carded a pair of birdies on the front, and then back-to-back at Nos. 13 & 14 in an even-par round. The Honolulu native finished the 2016 NCAA Shoal Creek Regional in fourth, after a T18 result in 2015 as a sophomore in Raleigh.
Kim and Komoto were two of just 15 players (in a field of 96 student-athletes) who recorded scores at or below par on Monday.
Junior Sarah Cho fired a 2-over 74 (T24) while sophomore Janet Mao carded a 3-over 75 (T30) to round out a quartet of Wildcats in the Top-30 after 18 of 54 scheduled holes.
Head coach Emily Fletcher's Wildcats finished the day at 5-over, in a tie for third with the host Georgia Bulldogs, the second seed. Only one team on the leaderboard, Big Ten peer Michigan State, managed a score below par on Monday. Northwestern led the field with 46 pars during the opening round.
The top-six teams in each of the four NCAA Regionals (Athens; Albuquerque, N.M.; Columbus, Ohio; Lubbock, Texas) will advance to the 2017 NCAA Championships at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois, beginning on May 19.
