Northwestern Edged by UIC, 3-0

CHICAGO — Northwestern scrapped together a pair of hits and got four runners on base, but UIC's pitching proved to be too much as the Wildcats fell to the Flames, 3-0, Tuesday night at Granderson Stadium.

Sophomores Willie Bourbon and Jack Dunn each singled in the effort, while Jack Claeys reached on a walk and Ben Dickey got on base via a fielder's choice.

Jacob Key earned the victory for the Flames after throwing 6.0-scoreless innings and holding Northwestern two a pair hits. Charlie Cerny, Mitchell Schulewitz and Alex Padilla each threw one inning and held the Wildcats hitless. Padilla earned the save for the Flames.

Following a pair of scoreless innings from Davis, UIC was able to breakthrough in the score column by plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on two hits. Davis responded by working a scoreless top of the fourth with a pair of strikeouts.

Following Bourbon's single in the top of the third, UIC's Key retired 11 consecutive Northwestern batters until Dunn hustled out an infield single in the top of the sixth.

Cooper Wetherbee entered in the top of the fifth and tossed 3.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out one.

Danny Katz pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning to give Northwestern a chance to complete a ninth-inning comeback, but the Wildcats were unable to get a runner on in their final hacks.

Northwestern will host Iowa in a three-game series this weekend at Miller Park.
