WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Northwestern's time at the 2017 Big Ten Tournament came to an end with a 4-2 loss to No. 4 seed Wisconsin in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon at Purdue.
The fifth-seeded Wildcats (21-10) held a 2-1 advantage through doubles and two singles matches, but the Badgers (17-6) notched three straight victories to advance to the semifinals, where they will take on regular season champion Ohio State.
Wisconsin claimed the early doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 with the point-clinching win coming at No. 1. The 'Cats 59th-ranked team of Strong Kirchheimer and Dominik Starý was tied 4-4 at No. 2 before their match went unfinished.
No. 71 Konrad Zieba moved right though his singles match, beating Josef Dodridge, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 to knot the team score at one. No. 37 Kirchheimer followed shortly after with a 6-4, 6-4, win at No. 1 for his team-leading 26th win of the year, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
Successive victories at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 put Wisconsin on top, with the three set win at No. 5, providing the fourth and final point for the Badgers.
The 'Cats' Jason Seidman led in the third set at No. 6 when his match was abandoned.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will now wait to hear its NCAA regional fate. The NCAA tournament begins May 12 at regional host sites.
