Four Wildcats Earn All-Big Ten Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern is well represented on the 2017 All-Big Ten Team with four players earning conference accolades, the Big Ten announced Thursday.

Strong Kirchheimer and Konrad Zieba are first team selections, while Sam Shropshire and Dominik Starý received second team nods. Kirchheimer's selection to the first team was unanimous. The Wildcats earned the most selections of any school.

Northwestern has never before had four players earn all-conference honors in the same season. The previous high was three, achieved twice, including last year.

Shropshire is just the third player in program history to be named All-Big Ten in all four years of his Northwestern career. He joins Paul Wei (1978-81) and Steve Herdoiza (1988-91) on that esteemed list. Kirchheimer is a three-time selection and one of just five players at Northwestern to earn at least three All-Big Ten nods.

Kirchheimer's unanimous selection is well deserved following an historic campaign for the senior. He won 25 matches overall, including a 16-7 mark in dual play all at the No. 1 spot. He won eight times against ranked opponents and reached as high as No. 25 in the national polls. Kirchheimer won the ITA Midwest Regional in the fall and represented the United States at the 2016 Master'U in France. He is the all-time winningest doubles player in Northwestern history with 72 career victories and climbed the ranks in singles, currently standing fourth with 105 wins.

Zieba received a second straight First Team nod following another 20-win campaign. The senior was 20-10 overall and 18-7 in dual matches, largely at the No. 2 position. Shropshire is 8-7 so far after missing much of the first part of the season due to injury. He posted a 4-2 mark in the Big Ten at the No. 3 spot.

True freshman Starý made an impact in his first collegiate season, going 22-8 in the regular season, including a 7-2 mark in the conference. He won the Big Ten Singles Tournament in the fall, becoming the first Wildcat since Raleigh Smith in 2012 to do so.

Kirchheimer and Starý have teamed up to go 18-4 in doubles between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. They are currently tied for 10th in single-season wins, and the duo ranks fifth in single-season winning percentage. Zieba and Shropshire also teamed up for the most of the year, winning 10 matches at the No. 1 spot. That duo has posted a 29-12 record over the past two seasons.

Jason Seidman earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Northwestern is ranked No. 23 in the country and is the No. 5 seed in this weekend's Big Ten Tournament.
