EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern earned the No. 5 seed in this weekend's Big Ten Tournament, the conference announced.
The 21st-ranked Wildcats (20-9, 7-4) will open tournament play with a matchup against No. 12 seed Michigan State (11-17, 0-11) on Thursday at 10:30 am CT.
The 2017 Big Ten Tournament will be hosted by Purdue at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Ind. from April 27-30.
Ohio State earned the No. 1 seed in the conference for the 12th year in a row. Michigan earned the No. 2 seed and Illinois was No. 3. Northwestern, Wisconsin and Purdue tied for fourth place with a 7-4 record in conference, and the Badgers took the No. 4 seed in a tiebreaker.
A win over Michigan State on Thursday would advance the Wildcats to a quarterfinal match against Wisconsin on Friday at 10:30 a.m. The semifinal in the Buckeyes' half of the bracket is scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the final set for Sunday at 10 a.m. The final will be broadcast live on BTN for the first time.
Northwestern already swept the Spartans earlier this month, 7-0. In a potential quarterfinal against the Badgers, the Wildcats would be looking to avenge a 4-2 defeat in Madison in late March.
Last season, the 'Cats advanced to the semifinals before falling to Illinois.
Northwestern boasts a 20-9 record and has tallied 20 wins for the fifth straight season. The 'Cats are currently ranked No. 21 in the country.
