EVANSTON, Ill. — Three members of the Northwestern wrestling program were named to the NWCA All-Academic team, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced this week.
Redshirt sophomore Johnny Sebastian, redshirt junior Mitch Sliga, and redshirt senior Jacob Berkowitz were the three Wildcat honorees.
Awarded annually, the NWCA All-Academic team is comprised of 135 student-athletes. To qualify for the NWCA All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and either been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule, and must have competed in at least 60 percent of the schedule.
All three were NCAA qualifiers.
Sebastian, a learning and organizational change major, placed seventh at the Big Ten Championships, winning three of his five matches. He went 19-10 in his first season of competition.
Sliga, an economics major, went 18-13, finished the season ranked No. 22 at 184 lbs., and beat Tanner Lynde of Purdue to make it to the ninth-place match at Big Ten Championships.
Berkowitz, enrolled in post-baccalaureate studies as a graduate student, led the team with 22 wins and 12 dual wins. The No. 25-ranked 184-lb. wrestler at the end of the season, he made his first trip to the NCAA Championships at the conclusion of the 2016-17 campaign.
