EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 16 Northwestern rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Texas Tech, 5-2, on Sunday at Combe Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders took an early lead in a tense doubles point. Chris Ephron and Michael Lorenzini fell at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, but were one point away from making it 5-5. Similarly at No. 2, Strong Kirchheimer and Dominik Stary were one point from forcing a tiebreak at 6-6 but instead lost 7-5. Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba also ended their doubles set locked in a tiebreak.
Texas Tech made the lead 2-0 when Stary, playing up from his usual spot, was defeated by Bjorn Thomson, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
The comeback started at No. 2 singles when the 40th-ranked Zieba easily put away Connor Curry, 6-3, 6-2.
The Wildcats tied the match at 2-2 after the 26th-ranked Kirchheimer finished off the 54th-ranked Jolan Cailleau, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles.
Jason Seidman gave Northwestern a 3-2 lead at No. 5 singles when he defeated Carlos DiLaura 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Ben Vandixhorn completed the comeback for the 'Cats with shades of last season's numerous clinch points when he defeated Alex Sendegeya in a dramatic 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win to make it 4-1.
With the match clinched, Brenden Volk added to the lead at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (4), victory over Jackson Cobb.
Chicago's Big Ten is back in action on Friday, Mar. 24, after three weeks off, when they resume Big Ten play at home against Purdue before a Sunday, Mar. 26 clash on the road at Indiana.
