INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 8 Wildcats battled against the best fencers in the country on the first day of the women's competition at the NCAA Fencing Championships at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis, Ind.
Both Stephanie Chan and Pauline Hamilton picked up five wins each in the foil and epee competitions, respectively, through three rounds of bouts.
Chan started the day off for Northwestern with a 3-4 record in the first round. Chan earned two more wins in the next two rounds and finished the day in 19th place with victories over fencers from Harvard, Cornell, Incarnate Word, and Duke. Chan is just two wins away from 12th place and the top half of the group in a cluttered field.
Hamilton impressed early with a 4-3 record that put her in 11th place at the end of the first round. After three rounds, she finished with five wins over fencers from Ohio State, Temple, NJIT, Notre Dame and Duke. Hamilton sits in 21st place with the 13th place fencer owning just one more win than she does.
Both 'Cats will resume competition tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT for their last ten bouts in rounds four and five, before the top four fencers from each weapon advance to the semifinals and finals. The knockout rounds will be televised on WatchESPN.
