Northwestern Set For NCAA Midwest Regionals

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 8 Northwestern will compete at the NCAA Midwest Regionals on Saturday at Wayne State in Detroit, Mich. as it looks to continue its strong postseason.

The competition features a round-robin tournament in each weapon group made up of the top fencers in the region. Each school can send up to four fencers per weapon.

The Wildcats will be represented by Pauline Hamilton, Ella Lombard and Katie Van Riper in epee, Stephanie Chan and Yvonne Chart in foil, and Alisha Gomez-Shah, Cindy Oh, Emine Yucel and Maddy Curzon in sabre.

Hamilton has impressed in her freshman campaign including deep runs in individual competitions. She finished seventh at the October North American Cup and third in the junior division at the January NAC. She finished fifth in the individual competition two weeks ago at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships.

Lombard led the epee squad with a silver medal at the MFC Championships this season and went 4-1 as the team earned a gold medal overall. One of her performances of the season came on the second day of the NU Duals in February, when she went 8-1.

Van Riper also impressed at the MFC Championships and earned a bronze medal. She stood out at the Philadelphia Duals this season against tough opposition, when she finished 9-3.

Chart was the best Wildcat finisher in the MFC foil competition with a bronze medal. Chan was not far behind with a fifth place finish. The two both had a strong NU Duals with Chart picking up 12 wins while Chan tallied 10. Last year at the regionals, Chart finished tenth while Chan finished 12th

Gomez-Shah, Oh, and Curzon all are returners to the Midwest Regionals after finishing sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, last season. Gomez-Shah took home a silver medal at the MFC sabre competition and Curzon won a bronze, while Oh and Yucel finished sixth and seventh.

The Midwest Regionals will help determine which fencers are selected for the NCAA Championships on Mar. 25-26 in Indianapolis, Ind. Live results for the regionals are available at: http://bit.ly/2lLxPZv.
