EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern freshman Hank Christie has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Christie, a right-handed starter, tossed a complete game against Santa Clara on Saturday, holding the Broncos to one run on six hits in Northwestern's 7-1 win. Christie struck out four and did not allow a walk.
The dominant performance lowered Christie's ERA on the season to 2.25 through three starts. The game marked the first victory of the Oak Park, Ill., native's Wildcat career.
Christie needed just 105 pitches to go the distance Saturday while retiring 25 of the 32 batters he faced.
Christie is the second straight Northwestern player to capture Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. Second baseman Alex Erro received the award last week for his performance in the Mule Mix Classic, when he batted .700 with a 1.869 OPS.
