Wildcats Late Rally Falls Short at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Connor Lind roped a double in the top of the ninth inning to bring home a pair of runs, but it was not enough as Northwestern fell, 3-2, in the first game of a four-game set at Santa Clara.

Northwestern went to Joe Schindler for the start on the bump, but he exited the game after the first inning and head coach Spencer Allen turned to Josh Davis out of the pen. Davis rose to the occasion and went 5.0 innings only allowing two hits and one run, while tallying four strikeouts.

Santa Clara tallied a run off Schindler in the first, but then couldn't cross another run until the seventh inning when the Broncos tallied a pair.

SCU's Jacob Steffens threw a complete game for the Broncos, only allowing two runs on four hits and striking out 11 batters. Matt Hopfner, Alex Erro and Jack Dunn in addition to Lind were the only 'Cats to tally hits.

With Lind on second in the ninth inning and two away, Charlie Maxwell smacked a line drive that was caught by Santa Clara's shortstop.

Due to weather on Saturday, first pitch has been moved up an hour to 2 p.m. CT. Game two of the doubleheader is still set to start 30 minutes after game one ends.

The Wildcats will roll out a pair of freshmen tomorrow on the mound with Hank Christie starting game one and Matt Gannon getting the ball in game two.
