Five Wildcats Head To Junior Olympics

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 9 Northwestern will send five freshman fencers to compete at the USA Junior Olympics Championships this weekend at Kansas City, Mo.

Alexandra Banin, Abby Tartell, Amy Jia, Adelle Berdichevsky and Pauline Hamilton all will represent the Wildcats against the best underclassmen fencers from around the country.

Berdichevsky and Hamilton will compete on Saturday in the epee competition while Banin and Jia will fence on Sunday in foil. Tartell will also fence on Sunday in sabre. Fencing begins on both days at 8 a.m.

Hamilton is seeded 11th in the epee field and already has success this year in individual competition. She finished fifth at the Remenyik Open, seventh at the October North American Cup, and third in the junior competition at the January NAC.

Berdichevsky has been another talented addition to the epee squad, highlighted by her 10-2 performance at the Vassar Duals in November.

Jia has posted a solid season in foil and is coming off a strong 10-2 showing at the Duke Duals last weekend.

Banin finished in the top-64 at the senior foil competition in the October NAC and also fenced well at the Duke Duals, finishing 7-5.

Tartell has made an instant impact in sabre this season, starting with a perfect 12-0 record at the Vassar Invitational last November. She went 8-4 at the DeCicco Duals and NU Duals within the last month.
