EVANSTON, Ill. – Redshirt-freshman Anthony Rubinetti earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors after beating the first ranked opponent of his career in Northwestern's 33-10 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday.
Rubinetti pinned Freddie Rodriguez, the No. 12 wrester in the country at 125 lbs., in the first period of the second match of the night to give the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish.
The Northwestern freshman got down 6-0 in the early going but reversed Rodriguez and pinned him with just seconds remaining in the first period.
Rubinetti improved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in duals with the win. It was his third win by fall this year. He is fourth on the team in dual points scored with 24.
Northwestern finished the nonconference portion of the schedule with a 5-1 mark and starts Big Ten competition with a match vs. No. 4 Ohio State at Wadsworth High School in Wadsworth, Ohio, on Sunday, Dec. 18.
