Northwestern Signs Four-Member Class of 2021

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach Kate Drohan today announced the signing of four future Wildcats to National Letters of Intent. The quartet comprises the Class of 2021 and will matriculate to campus in the fall of 2017.

"We are honored that Mac Dunlap, Summer Hargett, Rachel Lewis and Kenna Wilkey have chosen to make Northwestern their home for the next four years," Drohan said. "Their love of the game is contagious, as is their love for Northwestern. We cannot wait to see them every day."

Dunlap, Lewis and Wilkey all hail from the Midwest and are club teammates with the Beverly Bandits. Among them they helped win the 2016 PGF 16u and ASA Gold 18u national championships with the Bandits. Hargett hails from San Diego, Calif., and she too has a championship pedigree with 2012 and 2016 national tournament titles under her belt.  She currently competes for the So Cal Explosion.

Dunlap already is a two-time all-state and three-time all-conference award winner in Indiana where she hit .462 with a 1.223 OPS during her junior season, leading Crown Point High School to a 57-5 record over the past two seasons.

"Mac is a hard-nosed, tough, high-energy player," Drohan said. "She will make an impact on the infield with her great understanding and feel for the game."

In addition to her club success in Southern California, Hargett was named an All-Western League first-team selection for Point Loma High School. Her athleticism extends far beyond the softball diamond and will contribute to her success in Purple.

"Summer is an excellent athlete who also has a black belt in karate and competes in the pole vault in track and field," Drohan said. "She has right-handed power and the potential to anchor the middle of our lineup."

Lewis brings exceptional speed to the program. A two-time all-state selection as a freshman and sophomore in high school, she recorded identical .546 batting averages in those seasons. After suffering an injury that kept her out in 2016, Lewis will be back on the field in the spring of 2017.

"Rachel can change the complexion of a game on the base paths," Drohan said. "An excellent student with a great work ethic, she can play the outfield and the infield at the Big Ten level."

Wilkey is a power pitcher with a powerful bat at the plate. A two-sport star at Reed Custer in Braidwood, Ill., Wilkey enters her senior season in 2017 with over 700 strikeouts in the circle and a better than .500 average at the plate. In just three seasons, she also is a 1,000-point scorer as a post player in basketball.

"Kenna mixes speeds well and spins the ball through the zone," Drohan said. "We are looking for Kenna to have an immediate impact on our staff and to provide an offensive spark as well."
