Ashley Deary drew yet another foul and stepped to the charity stripe just before halftime on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena. She coolly stepped up to the free throw line, and drained a pair of shots for her eighth and ninth points of the game.
The first make against Oral Roberts was Deary's 1,000th career point. She became just the third active Wildcat to accomplish the feat, joining fellow co-captains Nia Coffey and Christen Inman.
"I am so thankful for the support from my teammates and coaches for helping me reach this milestone," Deary said.
Deary did not even acknowledge her milestone in-game and instead went right back to work. The senior captain finished the game with 11 points and a team-best five assists and four steals.
"I want to congratulate Ashley on scoring her 1,000th point," said head coach Joe McKeown. "She is just an outstanding young lady and represents our program in a first-class manner. We are really proud of her. She fought through and made some things happen for us when we needed her to."
Last year, Deary led the country in steals (4.34 spg) and broke Northwestern's all-time career steals record with 363 total steals just midway through her junior year. After accumulating 125 steals through 29 games last season, Deary shattered the Big Ten's single-season record – a league mark that stood for 20 years. She recorded 20 double-digit scoring games during her junior campaign and tallied five double-doubles. She is now just 56 steals away from breaking the Big Ten career record of 372.
