The Wildcats played especially well in the second set, leading No. 1 Minnesota at several points before the Gophers pulled away down the stretch to grab back the momentum of the match.
Symone Abbott led the way with nine kills. She just missed a double-double, also adding nine digs.
Six Wildcats had kills with Maddie Slater adding eight, Kayla Morin seven and Gabrille Hazen six.
The Wildcats' balanced defense saw four players with seven or more digs, led by Rafae Strobos' 10. Strobos played libero for the second straight time.
Northwestern hit nearly .200, but Minnesota's high-powered attack racked up a .322 clip.
