EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern women's swimming and diving team opens it season on Saturday with a quad-dual meet at Chicago.
UIC and Olivet Nazarene fill out the four-team event in Hyde Park in Chicago. The meet will start at 11 a.m
Rosendahl Returns
Sophomore Olivia Rosendahl returns to the diving board this season after an incredible summer. Rosendahl missed the Olympic Trials due to illness, but competed at the AT&T USA Diving National Championships in August. She won a gold medal in the open platform event with a 303.55 and a silver medal in the 3M competition. Last season, Rosendahl became the first All-American NU diver in program history after finishing fourth from the platform at the NCAA Championships in March.
New 'Cats
Head Coach Abby Steketee added seven first-year swimmers to the team as a part of class of 2020, who all could make their collegiate debuts at Chicago on Saturday. Among the newcomers is Valerie Gruest Slowing, who competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 400 and 800 free. Slowing is joined by Nicole Aarts, Irune Andres, Sandra Freeman, Malorie Han, Emmy Hruby, and Krystal Lara.
Olympic Trials
Northwestern has nine athletes on its roster that competed at the U.S. Olympic Time Trials last summer in Omaha, Nebraska. Returners Lauren Abruzzo, Peyton Greenburg, Julianne Kurke, Lacey Locke, Melissa Postoll, Ellen Stello and Mary Warren swam at the trials as did incoming freshmen Sandra Freeman and Krystal Lara. Postoll had a breakout summer at the trials, highlighted by her ninth place finish in the 200 M backstroke with an impressive 2:11.67.
Stetekee's Second Season
Head coach Abby Stetekee enters her second season in charge of the Wildcats after guiding the team to an 8-4 record in her first year. This is the second year in a row she and the 'Cats have started their season against Chicago and UIC, having defeated both teams last year by over 100 points.
Jesse Moore Joins Wildcats as Associate Head Coach
Steketee announced in September the addition of Jesse Moore as the program's associate head coach. Moore will spearhead recruiting, development and communications in addition to implementing daily practice plans for the Wildcats. He joins Northwestern following four years as the assistant swimming coach and director of recruiting at Duke where he coached all training groups for both the men's and women's teams. During his time with the Blue Devils, Moore helped student-athletes break 103 schools records, while 21 swimmers qualified for the NCAA Championships and 2016 Olympics Team Trials.
