ITA Regional Championships Begin Thursday

EVANSTON, Ill. – The 2016 ITA Regional Championships are set to begin Thursday inside the Varsity Tennis Center at Ohio State. The five-day event culminates with the championship matches on Monday, Oct. 24 with a guaranteed spot at the ITA National Indoor Championships on the line.
 
Northwestern is sending six singles players and three doubles teams to Columbus, Ohio, to compete for the coveted regional title.
 
Two Wildcats fill the top two seeds in singles play with Konrad Zieba the No. 1 overall seed and Strong Kirchheimer at No. 2. Four Northwestern players are seeded in the top-15.
 
Joining Zieba and Kirchheimer at the Midwest Regionals in the main singles draw are freshman Dominik Starý (No. 13) and sophomores Jason Seidman (No. 15) and Michael Lorenzini.
 
Freshman Chris Ephron kicks off the whole tournament in the qualifying draw on Thursday. He will take on Niko Wasilewicz of UIC in the first round of competition at 8 a.m. The second round of qualifying is later Thursday afternoon.
 
The main draw of singles and doubles begins Friday afternoon. Matchup information will be updated as play progresses.
 
Two new Northwestern doubles teams are seeded in the top-8. Zieba and Stary make up the No. 5 tandem, while Kirchheimer and freshman Brenden Volk are No. 8. Lorenzini and Ephron will also compete for the 'Cats in doubles.
