EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Pascale Massey is the Big Ten Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week while Saar de Breij is the Big Ten Field Hockey Freshman of the Week the Conference office announced Tuesday.
It is the first such honor for both individuals. Massey is the second Wildcat this season to be named Offensive Player of the Week following Eva van Agt who earned the distinction Sept. 20.
Both Massey and de Breij were instrumental in leading Northwestern to two wins over top-10 teams last weekend.
Massey scored the game-winning goal in both of Northwestern's impressive victories. Against fourth-ranked and previously undefeated Penn State on Friday, Massey recorded a game-high five shots including notching the game-winning goal in the 55th minute in the NU's 5-3 win. She followed up the performance by posting a game-high four shots while tallying two goals as NU defeated No. 6 Maryland, 3-2. Massey tallied a goal in the second minute of the contest before breaking a 2-2 tie with her second of the game in the 60th minute.
Meanwhile, de Breij tallied a goal in both of Northwestern's wins. In Friday's victory over Penn State, de Breij scored in the 42nd minute, capping a string of three goals in three minutes that put the Wildcats up 3-1 at the time. She then posted a goal in the 53rd minute against Maryland that gave Northwestern a lead en route to the team's second win of the weekend as the Wildcats gained sole possession of first place in the Big Ten.
Massey and de Breij are tied for fourth on the team with four goals apiece this season.
Northwestern (8-2, 3-0 B1G) jumped up five spots in this week's NFHCA poll to No. 6. The Wildcats travel to Rutgers for a 1:30 p.m. Central time contest Friday before playing at Drexel at 11 a.m. CT Sunday.
