EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 13 Denver scored a pair of second-half goals to top Northwestern, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Martin Stadium.
The result drops the Wildcats to 1-2-0 on the campaign, while Denver improves to 2-0-1 overall this season.
Denver broke the scoreless game in the 67th minute when Chandler Crosswait sent a through ball to a streaking Andre Shinyashiki, who was able to find an opening towards the far post. Sam Hamilton was also credited with an assist on the play.
Northwestern got into the scoring column in the 71st minute when Jeffrey Hopson placed a penalty kick to the right side of the net to pull even with Denver at 1-1. The goal was Hopson's first of the year and it was the third goal that the Wildcats have scored from the penalty spot this season.
The game-winning goal came just moments later in the 73rd minute. Alex Underwood took a shot from just inside the 18-yard mark of the left side of the box that found the back of the net and eventually led to Denver's 2-1 victory. Hamilton was credited with his second assist of the day on the play.
The Wildcats held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks, while the Pioneers outshot Northwestern, 14-8. Camden Buescher led the way for Northwestern in shots with three and Hopson tallied a pair, including the goal.
Francisco Tomasino made four saves in the effort, three of which came in the first half.
Northwestern will head to the road for the first time this season when it makes the trip to Milwaukee, Wis., on Monday, Sept. 5 to battle Marquette at 7 p.m. CT.
