Northwestern Dominates UMass in 5-0 Win

DURHAM, N.H. – Four different players scored for No. 16 Northwestern as the Wildcats rolled to a 5-0 win over UMass Sunday at the Wildcat Classic hosted by the University of New Hampshire.

NU (1-1) scored three times in the first half in surging out to an insurmountable lead at the intermission.

Isabel Flens, Lily Katzman, Dominique Masters and Elena Curley each tallied goals for Northwestern. For both Katzman and Curley it was their first goal in an NU uniform.

The 'Cats wasted little time in getting on the board as Flens scored her first of the season at the 2:51 mark. The senior found space on the left wing and fired a reverse-stick shot past Emily Hazard to the far post to make it 1-0.

A penalty corner helped Northwestern stretch its lead to two. Masters fired a blast from just inside the top of the circle that was deflected home by Katzman at 13:59.

It didn't take long for the lead to grow to 3-0. Flens found herself alone on the right wing and connected with the stick of Masters who put it past Hazard at the 15:34 mark.

Northwestern didn't waste much time early in the second half in increasing the lead to 4-0. The Wildcats initially mishandled the insertion of a penalty corner, but Sophia Miller gained control, handled the ball to her right and then found Curley alone in front. The junior transfer found the back of the cage at 38:10 for the first time in an NU uniform.

Northwestern finished off the scoring at 58:42. Flens lifted a shot over Hazard for her second goal of the game and the season, increasing the Wildcats' advantage to 5-0. Charlotte Vaziri was credited with an assist on the goal.

NU finished with just a 13-12 edge in shots, though the advantage was 11-5 in shots on goal. Lindsay von der Luft made five saves to earn her first shutout of the season.

NU returns to action at 3 p.m. Central time Friday when it takes on Boston College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
