EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern Chapter of Uplifting Athletes annual Lift For Life event on Thursday, July 21, has been canceled due to the projected heat index of 110 degrees on the turf practice field.
"The athletic training staff has advised us to cancel the Lift for Life event, though we will still dedicate our closed morning workout Thursday to the rare disease community," said Tommy Doles, Northwestern Uplifting Athletes Chapter President. "Thank you all who planned to come to the event. We are quite disappointed, but proud to have already raised over $6,000, and awareness for the rare disease community; football has real power to affect positive change!"
Lift For Life is the signature fundraising event for the Uplifting Athletes nationwide network of college football student-athlete led chapters. The Wildcats Chapter will continue its mission of using college football as a platform to inspire the rare disease community with hope through the power of sport.
The Northwestern Chapter leaders held a player draft for its 2016 Lift For Life and divided the squad into 12 teams. You can search for your favorite Wildcats player and make a donation for that team.
In order to support the Northwestern Chapter and help the Wildcats reach its $7,500 Lift For Life goal, visit the Northwestern Chapter fundraising site HERE.
The challenges faced by the rare disease community are bigger than any one individual, team or organization can tackle alone. The grassroots effort of the Northwestern Chapter, along with a nationwide network of teams, is uniquely positioned to educate and engage the local community and shine a spotlight on rare diseases.
The Northwestern Chapter started tackling rare diseases in 2009 when it joined Uplifting Athletes. The student-athlete led Northwestern Chapter has served the rare disease community on two fronts.
When the Northwestern Chapter was formed in 2011, the Wildcats were inspired by former Northwestern and Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian's support of the rare disease Niemann-Pick Type C. More recently, the leaders of the chapter chose to use a personal relationship and added ALS as part of the motivation to support the rare disease community through Uplifting Athletes.
Please consider helping the Northwestern Chapter of Uplifting Athletes tackle rare diseases.
A nonprofit organization founded in 2007, Uplifting Athletes inspires the rare disease community with hope through the power of sport. A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans and typically lacks financial incentive to make and market new treatments. With a network of university chapters run by current college football student-athletes that spans all major conferences, Uplifting Athletes has had an economic impact of more than $400 million on the rare disease community.
