EVANSTON – The Wildcats scattered five hits on Monday afternoon in their home finale, but could not drive home a run as California closed out a series sweep against Northwestern.
The Golden Bears got off to a quick start as the first batter reached base and advanced on a passed ball. Cal's cleanup hitter used a one-out homerun to put the Bears up early, 2-0. The West Coast team added one more run before the Wildcats could retire the side.
Matt Hopfner launched the 'Cats first hit of the game in the bottom of the first, but NU was unable to jump on the scoreboard.
Hopfner finished the game with two hits after adding a single in the bottom of the ninth. Mat Jones joined his teammate with two hits of his own.
Cal used big innings to pull ahead for the win, including two four-run frames.
The Wildcats used seven pitchers as starter Dan Kubiak earned the loss after allowing three hits on three runs in the first stanza. Freshmen Tyler Lass and Danny Katz, junior Pete Hofman and sophomores Justin Yoss and JR Reimer saw time on the bump for NU.
Spencer Allen will close out his first season as Wildcats' head coach this weekend with a three-game series at Rutgers, beginning Friday, May 20.
