EAST LANSING, Mich. -- No. 30 Northwestern was eliminated from the 2016 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament on Saturday as the second-seeded Wildcats fell to third-seeded and 11th-ranked Michigan, 4-0.
The contest was a rematch from the final week of the regular season when Northwestern ended Michigan's 37-match Big Ten regular-season winning streak with a 4-3 win in Evanston.
Saturday's contest started outdoors but would later move indoors midway through singles play due to inclement weather.
Michigan got in front by taking the always-important doubles point which was a switch from the regular-season matchup. Erin Larner and Jillian Rooney picked up a 6-4 win for the Wildcats at the No. 3 spot, but the Wolverines were able to earn victories at Nos. 1 and 2 to take the early lead.
Each of Michigan's singles victories came in straight sets as the Wolverines got wins from Mira Ruder-Hook at No. 5 and 18th-ranked Brienne Minor at No. 3 before Alex Najarian clinched the match with a win at No. 4.
All three remaining matches on the courts were up for grabs when the Wolverines clinched the team victory.
