EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern's Morgan Nelson has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after pummeling the ball during the Wildcats home-opening series against No. 21 Minnesota.
Nelson hit .625 in the series with a 1.500 slugging percentage, driving in five runs on a double and a pair of home runs. She raised her average on the season 55 points with her 5-for-8 performance.
After reaching base once on a hit by pitch in the first game of the series, Nelson went off during a Sunday doubleheader. In the first contest of the series, she doubled and unleashed a laser-beam three-run home run to pull the Wildcats back into the game. She then finished 3-for-3 with another booming home run, this one good for a pair of runs in a 10-2 (5) run-rule victory over the ranked Gophers.
Nelson and the Wildcats return to action April 8-10 in the second weekend of their month-long homestand against Iowa.
