Cincinnati's Late Rally Tops Northwestern

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Northwestern took a 5-3 lead into the eighth inning, but could not hold on as Cincinnati scored three runs in the frame to go on and win game two of the series, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon.
 
Northwestern (5-13) started Matt Hopfner on the mound for the first time this season and the junior left-hander threw 4.1 innings and only surrendered three hits and one run. Tommy Bordignon (1-2) earned the loss after pitching three innings and giving up five runs.
 
A.J. Kullman (2-1) helped Cincinnati (8-11) to its eighth victory of the season after he came in during the fifth inning to pitch the remainder of the game, striking out four and only allowing one run.
 
The Wildcats outhit Cincinnati, 8-7, on the day and were led by Jack Dunn and Hopfner, who each had a pair of knocks. This was Hopfner's 10th multi-hit game of the season.
 
Zach Jones, Connor Lind and Jack Claeys each recorded RBIs, while Jake Schieber drove in two runs.
 
Northwestern will start Dan Kubiuk in tomorrow's series finale against the Bearcats. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
