CINCINNATI, Ohio — Reed Mason tossed 6.0 innings, striking out five and only allowing three hits and one run, but that run would prove to be the difference maker as Northwestern was edged, 1-0, by Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon.
Northwestern (5-12) was stumped at the plate by Cincinnati's (7-11) Andrew Zellner, who went all nine innings for the Bearcats and only surrendered two hits and finished the game striking out seven. Mason earned the loss on the afternoon and moves to 2-1 on the campaign.
Seniors Jake Schieber and Zach Jones both singled in the first inning to get the game started, but those were the only hits that Northwestern would collect on the afternoon. Connor Lind drew a walk in the top of the fifth and he was the final Wildcat that would get on base.
The Bearcats lone run came in the fourth inning when Treg Haberkorn singled home R.J. Thompson from second base.
Pete Homan threw 2.0 innings of relief for Northwestern. The right-hander struck out four of the eight batters he faced.
Northwestern and Cincinnati will meet again tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 12 p.m. CT. Matt Hopfner will get the ball to start for the Wildcats.
