EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern ran its winning streak to 11 with a 7-0 shutout of Detroit Saturday night at the Combe Tennis Center.
The No. 11 Wildcats (14-1) swept doubles and won every singles match in straight sets to secure their second of two wins during the day's doubleheader.
Chicago's Big Ten Team downed No. 8 Illinois in a thriller earlier in the day.
The Wildcats mixed things up a little bit in doubles play, moving Alp Horoz and Mihir Kumar up to No. 2 and partnering Konrad Zieba with freshman Michael Lorenzini. The point was won pretty handily regardless, as Horoz and Kumar played to a 6-1 win and Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer cruised to a 6-2 victory at No. 1 to clinch.
Kumar then raced to be done first in singles in just his second dual match appearance of the 2016 season. He won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 over Chance Conley to put the Wildcats up 2-0. Ben Vandixhorn followed with much less drama than his first match of the day, winning at No. 5 over Adam Zychowicz, 6-0, 6-1, to put Northwestern just one point away from the win.
Baev obliged with a dominating second set shutout to take his match at No. 3, 6-4, 6-0.
