COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 42 Northwestern finished off a convincing Big Ten weekend sweep on Sunday, rolling past host Maryland, 6-1.
The Wildcats were coming off a 7-0 victory over Rutgers on Friday. The win runs NU's conference record to 3-0.
Northwestern cruised to wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots to take the doubles point. The 13th-ranked duo of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp had no trouble with Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan, winning 6-1 at the top spot. At No. 2, the 43rd-ranked team of Erin Larner and Alicia Barnett took down Ekaterina Tour and Arnelle Sullivan, winning 6-3 to put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the match.
Northwestern carried the momentum into singles play, posting four of their five wins in straight sets. Jillian Rooney earned the most dominant win of the day as she defeated Olga Bredikhina 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Also scoring straight-set victories were 35th-ranked Lipp who defeated Nataliya Bredikhina 6-2 6-3 at No. 2, Barnett who topped Hovsepyan 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 and Brooke Rischbieth who downed Tour 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6.
Larner managed to pull out a victory at No. 1 in a superbreaker, defeating Stanova 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (9).
Northwestern takes a break before returning to action March 23 at Baylor.
