ITHACA, N.Y. – Northwestern won its third straight match with a 4-1 victory over No. 50 Rice Saturday afternoon at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
The 21st-ranked Wildcats (6-1) played the Owls as part of a round-robin event at Cornell this weekend.
As it has in every win this season, Northwestern came away with the doubles point to start the match. No. 52 Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer finished first with a 6-4 decision at No. 1 and were followed by Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire, who won 6-3 at No. 2. Zieba and Shropshire improved to 4-0 in the dual season.
Zieba came right back out in singles and dominated to the tune of a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jamie Malik at No. 2. The 16th-ranked Zieba was playing his first match of the season at the second singles spot. He traded places with Shropshire, who only made it into the second set at No. 1 before his match went unfinished.
Baev followed Zieba's win with another straight set victory, taking down Jake Hansen at No. 4 by a 6-4, 6-4 score to give Northwestern a commanding 3-0 lead.
Rice was able to pick up a win at No. 5, but Strong Kirchheimer put the Owls away with a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 3 over Adam Gustafsson. No. 55 Kirchheimer is 5-0 this season in duals and 11-2 overall.
Chicago's Big Ten Team finishes its stay in Ithaca with a 10 a.m. match tomorrow against host school Cornell.
