Northwestern teed off its spring stroke play season at the Puerto Rico Classic by surging three spots over the last two days to an eighth-place team finish. The Wildcats shot 1-over 865 during the three-day, 54-hole tournament at the par-72, 6,945-yard Rio Mar Country Club River Course.
After the first round, NU stood in 11th place after a shooting 5-over 293, but they bounced back for a 1-under 287 second round and an impressive 3-under 285 on the final day.
The Wildcats had the best finish of any other Big Ten foe in the 15-team field, including tournament host No. 14 Purdue.
Northwestern had three golfers finish under par at the event. Senior Andrew Whalen paced the Wildcats at 2-under 70 on days two and to finish ninth overall.
Sophomore Dylan Wu and senior Josh Jamieson both carded a team low 4-under par and finished tied 19th in the individual standings.
Competing individually, freshman Ryan Lumsden finished at 4-over 217 to tie for seventh.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Monday, Feb. 29, in the Jones Invitational in Valencia, Calif.
