EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 25 Northwestern continues its challenging start to the season Sunday when it hosts defending national champion and fifth-ranked Vanderbilt at 11 a.m. at Combe Tennis Center.
It will be the fifth top-30 team that the Wildcats have faced this season in as many opponents. NU (1-3) defeated No. 27 Arizona State to open its dual match campaign before falling to No. 11 Oklahoma State, No. 14 Duke and No. 21 UCLA.
The 'Cats are coming off a 6-1 defeat to the Bruins in Los Angeles last Sunday. Junior Brooke Rischbieth earned a hard-fought three-set victory at No. 6 singles for Northwestern. NU battled UCLA closely in three of the other singles matches but were edged in tiebreakers in each of those matches.
Sunday's match features three ranked doubles teams and four ranked individuals. In doubles, the Northwestern duo of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp are ranked No. 9 in the nation while the team of Alicia Barnett and Erin Larner debuted in this week's rankings at No. 35. Vanderbilt's team of Sydney Campbell and Courtney Colton comes in at No. 6. In singles play, Lipp is No. 51 for the Wildcats. Meanwhile, the Commodores have three individuals with national rankings: Frances Altick (16), Campbell (20) and Astra Sharma (22).
The all-time series between Northwestern and Vanderbilt is tied, 3-3. Vanderbilt won the most recent meeting 5-2 in Evanston Feb. 2, 2014.
The Commodores take a 5-1 record into their match at Ohio State on Saturday. The Buckeyes handed Vanderbilt its lone loss this season, 4-3, last Saturday at the ITA Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wisconsin.
