EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University and Welsh-Ryan Arena will serve as the host site for a 2016 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Boy's Basketball Class 4A Super-Sectional on Tuesday, March 15.
This will mark the first time that Northwestern and Welsh-Ryan Arena host an IHSA Super-Sectional since 2001.
The winner of the contest advances to the state tournament finals March 17-19 at the Peoria Civic Center.
Welsh-Ryan Arena boasts a long tradition of hosting super-sectional matchups. Current Northwestern head men's basketball coach Chris Collins appeared in his final prep game at the venue. His Glenbrook North High School squad – coached by current NU assistant coach Brian James – fell to Stevenson High School 75-73 in triple overtime on March 17, 1992 despite a 40-point performance by Collins.
"I think it's great to have a super sectional game back at Welsh-Ryan," Collins said. "I vividly remember the atmosphere for my final high school game. The place was sold out and there was tremendous energy on both sides. I think it's a terrific experience for local kids when you get to that stage of the year to have an opportunity to play in a venue like ours to go downstate."
Game time, participating schools and ticket information for the game on March 15 will be announced at a later date.
