EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 26 Northwestern opens it 2016 home dual season at 2 p.m. Sunday when it hosts No. 14 Duke at Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats are playing its first of eight home matches this season. The Wildcats also face Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech in nonconference play before taking on Nebraska, Iowa, Purdue, Indiana and Michigan in Big Ten play.
NU competed in ITA Kickoff Weekend last weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Northwestern opened up the weekend by avenging a loss in last year's event to Arizona State as they defeated the 27th-ranked Sun Devils, 4-2. The Wildcats then were defeated 4-0 the following day by host and 11th-ranked Oklahoma State as the Cowgirls advanced to the ITA Team Indoor Championship.
Sunday's match features two ranked doubles teams and five ranked individuals. In doubles, the Northwestern duo of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp are ranked No. 7 in the nation while Duke's team of Beatrice Capra and Ellyse Hamlin come at No. 26. In singles play, Lipp is No. 61 for the Wildcats. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils have four individuals with national rankings: Capra (28), Kaitlyn McCarthy (29), Hamlin (70) and Chalena Scholl (79).
The two teams met last season on Feb. 1 in Durham, North Carolina, with Duke coming away with a 5-2 victory. Northwestern picked up singles wins from Alex Chatt and Lok Sze Leung. The Blue Devils won the doubles point and got victories in singles at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 to earn the win.
Duke has won the last six meetings between the schools. Northwestern is seeking its first victory over the Blue Devils since notching a 4-3 victory on Feb. 14, 2009 as part of the ITA Team Indoor Championship which the Wildcats eventually won.
