TAMPA, Fla. -- No. 13 Northwestern returned to the New Year's Day bowl scene Friday at the 2016 Outback Bowl after the fourth 10-win season in program history, but fell in the game to No. 23 Tennessee, 45-6.

Northwestern's 24-member Senior Class is the lone class in #B1GCats history to win 10 games in two different seasons, winning the 2012 Gator Bowl during a 10-3 campaign and finishing 2015 with an identical 10-3 record.
Two offenses largely trying to find their way early struggled to make huge gains in the first quarter. Tennessee had a field goal try doink off the upright after intercepting an NU pass at the Wildcats' 22-yard line while Northwestern took advantage of three Volunteers late-hit penalties in the quarter -- including two on back-to-back plays -- to drive deep into UT territory prior to missing a field goal of its own.
Tennessee would open the scoring late in the first quarter with a 14-yard Joshua Dobbs run, then add a field goal on its next possession early in the second to take a 10-0 lead.
Northwestern bounced back with an effective, well-executed 12-play, 75-yard drive capped by a Justin Jackson five-yard scoring scamper. Jack Mitchell's extra point sailed wide, making the score 10-6 after the TD.
Tennessee answered with a 75-yard touchdown drive of its own to take a 17-6 lead into the half. Coming out of the break, the Wildcats never were able to get momentum, and the Volunteers added touchdowns late in the third quarter and again on a long quarterback scramble early in the fourth to make it a 31-6 game before one final touchdown and a pick-six with eight seconds remaining made the final 45-6.
Defensively, senior Traveon Henry set a new career-high and tied the Outback Bowl record with 16 tackles, while sophomore Godwin Igwebuike had a career-high 14 stops.
With a team-high 74 rushing yards in the game, Jackson moved up to fifth on NU's single-season rushing list with 1,418 total yards on the ground this season.
