FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Northwestern's second-seeded doubles team of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp was upset in its opening match of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships on Thursday afternoon.
After receiving an opening-round bye, the Wildcats duo went the distance before being edged in the round of 16 by the Dartmouth team of Kristina Mathis and Taylor Ng 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (9). The NU pairing dropped a close set before rolling in the second only to be nipped in extra points in the decisive super-breaker.
With the defeat, the Northwestern team has been forced into the second-round consolation doubles draw where it faces Stanford's Taylor Davidson and Caroline Doyle at 2 p.m. Central time Friday.
Chatt and Lipp had qualified for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships by winning the consolation draw at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American in California last month.
