SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Strong Kirchheimer punched his ticket to the quarterfinals at the ITA Regional Championships with a pair of wins Saturday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
The No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region, Kirchheimer beat the Fighting Irish's Grayson Broadus in his first match of the day by a 6-1, 6-2 score. He won in straight sets again in the Round of 16 over Maik Steiner of Western Michigan, 6-1, 6-3 and will face Indiana's Aron Hiltzik for a spot in the semifinals tomorrow.
Three Wildcats in singles action on Saturday split their respective matches. Fedor Baev, Ben Vandixhorn and Alp Horoz all won their second-round matches before falling in the Round of 16. Baev was able to force a third set against Ohio State's Raif Steinbach, but Steinbach prevailed by a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 score.
Northwestern is also well represented in doubles play with Baev and Kirchheimer reaching Sunday's quarterfinal round. The Wildcat duo won a pair of matches on Saturday, taking down Notre Dame's Grayson Broadus and Brendon Kempin, 8-5, before moving through 14th-seeded Daniel Fernandez and Alvaro Verdu from Marquette, 8-3, in the Round of 16.
The fifth-seeded tandem of Baev and Kirchheimer will play the tournament's No. 4 seeded team from Valparaiso – Charlie Emhardt and Jeffrey Schorsch – for a spot in the semifinals.
