ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern's women's tennis teams started competition at the ITA Midwest Regionals on Friday by earning a pair of doubles wins.
The second-seeded team of Erin Larner and Jillian Rooney were pushed to the limit in their first match of the tournament. After earning an opening-round draw, the Wildcats' duo escaped with an 8-7 (6) win over the Eastern Illinois team of Grace Summers and Hannah Kimbrough. The 'Cats advance to face Marquette's Gebes and Ambrosio in Saturday's round of 16.
The only other participants for Northwestern on Friday were the doubles team of Brooke Rischbieth and Lee Or who also received a first-round bye before defeating Western Michigan's Tracy Kuhle and Melina Lyubomirova 8-5. The pairing faces Ohio State's Miho Kowase and Anna Sanford, a No. 5-8 seed in the draw, in the round of 16.
Action continues Saturday with doubles play as well as the beginning of the singles main draw.
