EVANSTON, Ill. – Expectations are clearly high for Northwestern junior Jason Tsirtsis entering the 2015-16 season.
InterMat ranked the two-time defending Big Ten Champion first at 149 lbs. in its preseason poll released Tuesday.
Tsirtsis, the 2014 NCAA champion at 149 lbs., was also listed at the top of his weight class by FloWrestling on Sept. 26.
The redshirt junior is coming off a 2014-15 season in which he posted a 39-2 record while winning his second consecutive Big Ten title and finishing third at the NCAA Championships.
InterMat also recognized senior Dominick Malone with a spot at No. 14 at 125 lbs., and redshirt freshman Johnny Sebastian came in 16th at 165 lbs. Malone was 22-19 a year ago and qualified for the NCAA Championships at 133 lbs. Sebastian enters the 2015-16 season coming off an unattached year where he posted a 23-3 record.
Northwestern is 18th in the preseason tournament ranking and 21st in the dual meet poll. The Wildcats finished 15th at last year's NCAA Championships in St. Louis, marking the team's ninth top-15 finish in the last 11 years.
