LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the second straight competition senior Elena Barham was Northwestern's top-finisher in the 2015 Pre-Nationals Meet held Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
2015 Pre-Nationals Meet - Women's 6000m Black – RESULTS
Barham paced the Wildcats with a 21:37.1 time over the 6,000 meter course with classmate Rachel Weathered right on her heels at 21:41.5. The Madison, Wisconsin, native was also the top Northwestern runner at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational two weeks ago, finishing the 5k course in 17:35.8.
A quartet of young 'Cats were next across the line with sophomore Sara Coffey, freshman Hannah Anderson, freshman Mary Orders and sophomore Elena Miller rounding out the scoring group. Coffey made one of the biggest moves in the field after the halfway point, rising 25 spots between 3,000m and 6,000m.
The meet is scheduled as a preview of the upcoming NCAA Cross Country National Championship that will be held in Louisville on Nov. 21. The meet provides an opportunity for squads hoping to qualify for the premier event the weekend before Thanksgiving to run on the course.
The women's seeded race featured eight teams in the latest National Coaches Poll, and five teams receiving votes in the poll. Five of the eight ranked squads were ranked in the Top 10 of the latest poll, including second-ranked Colorado, No. 4 Oregon, No. 5 Michigan, No. 7 Georgetown and No. 8 Stanford.
Northwestern has just one tune-up remaining before hosting the 2015 Big Ten Championships at Chicago's Sidney Marovitz Golf Course on Nov. 1. The Wildcats will race at the Illini Open next Friday (Oct. 23) in Champaign-Urbana.
