Magallones Named #B1GBaseball Pitcher of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second time this season, a Northwestern Wildcat has been named the Big Ten pitcher of the week, the league announced Monday. This week's accolade goes to senior Brandon Magallones, who shut down Maryland on Thursday, May 14, in the final game of his collegiate career. This marks the fourth weekly honor for the Manhattan, Illinois, native.

Maryland entered the final regular-season series ranked third in the Big Ten, sitting just below conference leader Illinois and Iowa, but that did not deter the senior ace.

Magallones tossed 91 pitches in his NCAA-leading 16th start this year en route to his first career-complete game shutout. He scattered just two hits, while striking out seven batters. After giving up his only walk of the game in the top of the third, he immediately picked off the runner to end the inning unscathed. The senior was backed up by an RBI double from Jack Mitchell, who plated what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth.Magallones finished his collegiate career with 226 total strikeouts to rank seventh on NU's all-time top 10 list for career strikeouts.
