EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will play St. Mary's for the first time in program history when the NCAA tournament gets underway on Saturday, May 9. The 26th-ranked Wildcats (15-7) and Gaels (14-9) will meet at 11 a.m. CT at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
Seventh-seed UCLA is the regional host and will play Idaho in the first round. The two winners will meet on Sunday, May 10 at 2 p.m. for a spot in the Round of 16.
Northwestern is making its 17th straight NCAA tournament appearance and 25th overall. The Wildcats have advanced past the opening two rounds in 13 of the past 15 seasons.
A pair of freshman tied for the team lead in wins during the course of the season. All-Big Ten selection and Freshman of the Year Erin Larner won 28 matches, including 15 in the spring season. Alex Chatt also won 28, while going 18-4 in duals and 10-1 in conference play. Senior Lok Sze Leung was also a 20-match winner, going 25-12. Alicia Barnett posted a 6-5 mark at the No. 1 position in Big Ten play and earned All-Conference honors for her efforts.
Barnett and Larner team up on the nation's 48th ranked doubles team. The duo played to an 8-1 record during the regular season, including a perfect 6-0 mark at the No. 1 position in the Big Ten. The No. 2 team of Brooke Rischbieth and Rheeya Doshi are 7-2, and Alex Chatt and Lok Sze Leung are 12-3 at No. 3.
St. Mary's is ranked 40th in the ITA national poll. The Gaels are coming off a 4-0 loss to No. 19 Pepperdine in the West Coast Conference Tournament. St. Mary's beat Pepperdine, the highest ranked opponent the Gaels have beaten this season, in the regular season finale. The doubles team of Jana McCord and Parminder Kaur are ranked 58th with a 12-7 mark at the No. 1 spot.
