EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Sabrina Rabin (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) has been named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Year, headlining a trio of Wildcats who earned All-Big Ten honors for the 2015 season, the conference office announced today.
Rabin joins junior Andrea Filler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) as an All-Big Ten first-team selection while senior Andrea DiPrima (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) was chosen as a second-team honoree. Northwestern has had at least two first-team All-Big Ten selections in each of the last three years.
Rabin is the eighth Big Ten Freshman of the Year in Northwestern program history and the first for the Wildcats since Adrienne Monka in 2009. Rabin concluded the Big Ten season ranked first in the conference in steals (18), second in runs (32), third in batting (.456) and fourth in hits (36).
During the season, Rabin earned two Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards and one B1G Player of the Week accolade. She ranks among the nation's leaders in stolen bases per game and runs per game.
Filler earned the first All-Big Ten award of her career with the first-team nod in 2015. The junior is in her second season with Wildcats after transferring from Boston College prior to 2014; she was a second-team All-ACC choice as a freshman in 2012 before being granted a medical hardship waiver in 2013.
This year, Filler hit .400 in conference play with 33 RBIs, ranking fourth among B1G players in B1G games. She slugged .862 on the strength of six doubles and eight home runs. Overall in 2015, Filler has 59 total RBIs to rate second in the Big Ten while ranking 14th in the nation with 1.26 RBIs per game.
DiPrima earned her second-straight All-Big Ten second-team selection after batting .356 in league play with a .630 slugging percentage, three doubles, a triple and five home runs. She drove in 25 in NU's 22 conference contests.
Sophomore Anna Petersen (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) was named Northwestern's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree for the 2015 softball season. Student-athletes chosen for this honor are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, are in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
