EVANSTON, Ill. --Northwestern outhit Kansas on Tuesday afternoon, but the Jayhawks used a three-run home run in the top of the fourth to defeat the Wildcats, 6-2, at Rocky Miler Park.

KU struck first as senior Justin Protacio kicked off the game with a standup double and plated the game's first run off a sacrifice groundout to second from classmate Dakota Smith.

The Wildcats countered with a run in the bottom of the second when sophomore Joe Hoscheit drew a leadoff walk and advance to third on a pair of base hits. Freshman Grant Peikert singled down the right field line to cross Hoscheit and knot the game, 1-1.

Kansas added another run in the top of the third before exploding in the fourth frame. Freshman TJ Martin led the scoring that inning with a one-out home run to left field. A pair of walks and a steal put two Jayhawks in scoring position to set up first-year Owen Taylor's three-run bomb and increase KU's lead, 6-1.

Northwestern launched 10 hits in the final six innings, but were only able to drive home one more run.

Sophomore Joe Schindler took the loss for NU after allowing six runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings pitched. Graduate student Nate Walker, sophomore Pete Hofman and freshman Richard Fordon, who combined for three shutout frames, also saw time on the bump for Chicago's Big Ten Team.

Northwestern and Kansas close out game two of the midweek series on Wednesday, May 6, at 3 p.m. Justin Yoss is slated to take the mound for the Wildcats.
